Dear Subscriber,

We are aware it's been quite some time since we last sent out an update but here goes, and as usual and to promote the Team Sweden approach we set a side a portion of our newsletter to allow both Business Sweden and Taipei Mission in Sweden to present updates from their end.

During the AGM we announced our intention to facilitate a event during 2023, a first since the pandemic hit us. During said planning we have run into a slight legal dispute with Huashan Creative Park regarding payment for a previous Sweden Day event. As this venue is one of the few which are fit for purpose, it's not until this dispute has been settled we can proceed with drawing out detailed plans. We will keep you posted on this topic.

We hope to see you on our upcoming events!

/Fredrik & Sarah

2022 Business Climate Survey has been released
2022 Business Climate Survey has been released
For the 5th consecutive year, SCCT published our Business Climate Survey report. This year we launch this report in cooperation with Business Sweden in Taiwan and look forward to seeing Taiwan's data being incorporated in next year’s ‘Global Business Climate Survey’ report, as released annually by Swedish Chambers International and Business Sweden.

The purpose of the report is to increase the understanding of Swedish companies’ performance in Taiwan and deepen our appreciation of the opportunities and challenges that the market possesses. In addition, it will hopefully serve as a solid reference in bilateral trade talks between Sweden and Taiwan.

The past year has certainly introduced several challenges for Swedish companies in Taiwan. Challenges presented by the geopolitical environment as well as a rise in Covid-19 cases led to uncertainty as to how the developments would impact the Taiwanese market. Furthermore, pandemic related entry restrictions have had a big impact on the ability for companies to travel to and from Taiwan, affecting the opportunities to meet international partners during a time when most of the world has opened up again.

Thankfully, at the time of writing, the entry restrictions to Taiwan have been loosened significantly, and a resumption of pre-pandemic society can be expected to be imminent. Despite the different challenges, Taiwan’s economy is experiencing unprecedented growth and the island's real per capita GDP is expected to be the largest in East Asia, driven by continued strong domestic demand, with investment as the main catalysator, which has been driven by firms’ capital expenditure, green energy and 5G network infrastructure projects. While 2021 was an exceptional year for the Taiwanese economy, with a GDP growth of over 6 per cent, growth is expected to continue to outpace the average in East Asia for 2022.

The report highlights a positive business climate for Swedish companies in Taiwan and a strong investment outlook. In addition, the report showcases Taiwan’s stable market for Swedish companies to do business in. Taiwan’s market economy is institutionally sound, and it features transparent, clearly defined as well as rules for ensuring fair competition and largely equal opportunities for all market participants. An independent Fair Trade Commission supervises business practices to ensure fair competition. The market consistently ranks highly in global economic indices measuring ease of doing business, economic freedom and competitiveness.

In summary, we are very encouraged by the results and expect Taiwan to continue to cement its place as a core market for Swedish companies in East Asia, on the back of continued solid growth prospects along with ambitious plans to grow exports and make the market bilingual by 2030.

This report was launched at an event prior to Joint Business Council where Håkan Jevrell, State Secretary, Ministry for Foreign Affairs held a keynote and in addition to sending a copy to every member, it has also been distributed to members of the Executive and Legislative Yuan, selected Ministers of the Swedish Parliament and various other important stakeholders who'd be able to positively affect prerequisites for Swedish business' in Taiwan.

Lastly, we would like to extend our most sincere gratitude to the participating companies and respondents which have contributed to this report with valuable insights.

Sincerely Yours,

Two MOUs Signed in the 38th TW-SE JBC

The 38th Taiwan-Sweden Joint Business Council (JBC) was held successfully by CIECA and Business Sweden on Friday, November 18th, 2022.

We were proudly to see two MOUs on IPR and FinTech industrial cooperation signed under the witness of Deputy Minster Chern-Chyi Chen (Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan) and State Secretary Håkan Jevrell (Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Sweden).

The IPR and FinTech MOUs are both industrial collaborative MOUs: one signed by Swedish Patent Attorney Association (SEPAF) and Taiwan Patent Attorneys Association (TWPAA), and another signed by Swedish FinTech Consultancy Company, Norlinanders AB, and the Center of Industry Accelerator and Patent Strategy (IAPS), National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. With the two MOUs signed, we look forward to seeing more industrial exchanges and to further promoting closer cooperation and better business opportunities between Taiwan and Sweden.

Young Professionals
The end of this month finalises the one month “re-start” of Young Professionals after its slight pause during Covid-19 when borders were closed off. Lowering of Covid restrictions has led to an increase of our community with 12 Young Professionals members.

This time has thus been featured by dinners meant to strengthen the Swedish-Taiwanese community, a study visit to Atlas Copco on November 25th and participation in the Lucia train on December 10th (we will see you there!). We are expecting to carry out more study visits, seminars, and networking opportunities in the up-coming new year of 2023, and look forward to an increased cooperation between YP and you, our member companies.

Taking the Sweden Brand to the next level
Taking the Sweden Brand to the next level
As a kind reminder to the Swedish Parliamentarians who visited Taiwan in April 2022 we have sent a letter the them, congratulating to the recent election victory and also to remind them of commitments of support made during their visit and the motion about proposal to change the name of our representative office in Taiwan to 'House of Sweden'.

How this house eventually ends up being furnished and decorated is of less importance - the name carries much weight and sends a clear signal that Sweden is ready to take already excellent cultural, economic and trade relations to the next level.

Learning from Taiwan's public healthcare system
Learning from Taiwan's public healthcare system
Taiwan's economic miracle is well-known around the world. One of the reasons for its success is a sound public health infrastructure, which has paved the way for this economic breakthrough.

On the other hand, Sweden's healthcare system, which currently consumes around 12% of Swedish GDP and with ever growing queues, can learn a lot from Taiwan. This is why we are working with our corporate member PIKU to arrange a study visit to Taiwan for Swedish Healthcare politicians in May 2023.
