Dear Subscriber,

I trust you're all enjoying the fantastic Taiwan autumn weather and keep staying safe behind that mask.

Here's a quick rundown of what the Chamber has been up to during the autumn and what we all look forward to in November and December, before we send 2020 to the history books.

Early November we attended Business Sweden's very successful and well-visited 36th consecutive Sweden-Taiwan Joint Business Council in Grand Hyatt Taipei. Several members including Scania, Ericsson and Volvo were on the speaker stand. The meeting covered several topics on cooperation, which discussed the challenges and opportunities in smart transportation and digital healthcare, as well as smart cities and financial technology. In addition, the two sides emphasized their commitment to jointly build a more business-friendly environment, such as through transparent tax information, the recognition of Good Laboratory Operation data, and building general aviation relations.

We hosted a very well-visited webinar with the author Johan Nylander on his most recent book "The Epic Split - why made in China is going out of style", in fact we had to limit participation and will therefore facilitate a re-run in early January for those who missed it.

I'd like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone providing input to this year's Business Climate Survey, giving voice to the Swedish companies based in Taiwan and highlight the areas where we see opportunities to strengthen this important relationship and grow trade between Taiwan and Sweden. We launched the online and printed version early November during a breakfast seminar and if you have not received a batch of printed copies you will soon! Meanwhile, you can get a digital copy in English and Chinese.

I know 24 pages is a long read and the essence is in this exec summary for your convenience:

1. Build back better. The Taiwanese and Swedish governments should double down on their efforts to transform their two economies into digital, sustainable, and circular economies. Investments in joint research, innovation and business collaboration need to be promoted.

2. Make it easier to invest. While the SCCT praises recent Taiwan government measures to increase transparency and prior consultation periods, we strongly encourage the Taiwanese governing bodies to work with the EU to mutually recognize and adhere to common standards and test requirements, shortening time to market and cost of entry into Taiwan.

3. Make it easier to work, study and travel. The introduction of direct flights between Taiwan and Sweden in combination with an effort to increase student exchange and tourism between the locations would strengthen the long-term relationship between Taiwan and Sweden and open up for more business.

4. Establish a Sweden office in Taiwan. Strong official Swedish presence in Taiwan is needed to develop the dialogue between both governmental agencies and the Swedish business community on Taiwan

Looking ahead we have some very interesting online seminars, which we urge you to check out. We have Swedish St Lucia celebrations coming up on December 12th and of course our Chamber Winter Bash party on December 11th, where we hope to see you all!

The SCCT mentorship program saw it's official launch on November 10th. 13 mentors and 13 mentees met for the first time to explore Taiwanese food culture at the stove top. We're really looking forward to sharing with you all what sweet fruits this mentorship program will bear!
We arranged a Swedish fika meeting with our new Swedish representative to Taiwan Mr Bengt G Carlsson for our Young Professionals.

On Thursday, December 19th, we visited Volvo Cars Showroom in Neihu. We had the pleasure of viewing the newest models and hear about the Volvo business model, which puts safety of drivers, employees and the planet first. This has been a theme throughout Volvo history - did you know that a Volvo employee invented the three point seatbelt used in all cars today? Not only that, he decided not to patent it, saving millions of lives throughout history. If this doesn’t make us proud to be Swedish, we don’t know what would.

You can find the presentation of Volvo Cars here.
